TrailRunner is the perfect companion for runners, bikers and hikers. The application for Mac OS X helps journalize activities and plan routes based on maps.

TrailRunner supports many activity recording devices. This includes GPS enabled fitness devices like the Garmin ForeRunner, Garmin Edge, various Suunto and Polar watches, the Nike+ iPod SportsBand and Nike+ iPod. For the iPhone, TrailRunner can import data recorded with famous GPS enabled apps like Nike+ GPS, Trails, RaceBunny, 321run, MotionX, Runkeeper, Cyclemeter, runtastic, Trailguru, iTrail and many more able to export sessions as a KML or GPX file.

While the iPhone and fitness devices are perfect to record outdoor activities, they're not well suited for managing them. TrailRunner is the perfect application to fill this gap. TrailRunner manages recorded activities in a diary. Users can analyze and compare sessions, make collections, view courses on a map and display additional information like altitude, speed, heart-rate, temperature and more.

In addition, users can create and upload new routes to their fitness device. This enables users to plan a trip or workout session before leaving home. To plan routes, TrailRunner uses either the community driven OpenStreetMap service or the individual collection of previously completed courses. Routes can even be calculated based on distance or attractiveness. With iPhone apps like Trails and RaceBunny that feature offline mapping services, planned courses can be followed even in the back-country where cell reception may not be available.

TrailRunner is free but the author asks for a support fee of 25 Euro. TrailRunner is highly recommended on facebook and in the Mac centric outdoor and GPS community.
