How do the routing properties work?

Routing properties tell TrailRunner Mini how to get between your waypoints. Add the ones you care about and set them. The route recalculates around them.

What you can ask for

Prefer Trails Pick specific waymarked routes near you, and the route favours them. Use it to follow a named long-distance path rather than the shortest line.
Avoid Unpaved Keep to sealed surfaces.
Avoid Motorways Stay off major roads.
Avoid Steps Keep stairways out of the route. This matters for a bike, a buggy or a bad knee.
Avoid Steep Climbs How hard to work around gradient, from none to maximum. Turned up, it will make a route longer to keep it gentler.
Prefer Twisty Roads How strongly to favour bends over straight lines. Use it when the interesting way matters more than the direct one.
Surface Lean paved or lean natural.
Smart Round Trip Build a loop back to where you started. Give it a target of distance, time or calories, plus a rough direction to head in. It plans a circuit to match.

Off, on, and parked

Each property you add is a row, and each row can be switched on or off without losing its settings. A property that is off is parked: still configured, just not applied.

That makes comparing versions easy. Set up Avoid Steep Climbs the way you want it, then toggle it off and back on to see both routes. You never have to delete it and build it again.

Each property can only be added once, so there is no ambiguity about which setting is winning.

Which properties you see depends on the network

The available properties follow the routing network you are planning on: walking paths, cycling networks, roads. Avoiding steps is meaningful on foot and on a bike, and irrelevant on a motorway. The list only offers what makes sense for the network in use.

Note that this follows the routing network, not the activity you label the route with. You can plan on the hiking network and still call the finished route a run.

If Prefer Trails is empty

It offers the waymarked routes it knows about near you. It only knows an area whose OpenStreetMap data has been downloaded. If the list is empty, pan the map across the area, or preload it: see why trails and waymarks need a download first.
